Top tips for your newborn session

Congratulations on creating an adorable new member to your family! The first days & weeks of the newborn bubble can be such a magical, hazy, exhausting & joyous time in your life... & one that you will never get back.

Thank you for trusting me to document this special time. I have two children of my own & their newborn photos are some of my most precious possessions. I'm so looking forward to documenting your family, so you can adore their tiny details forever and never forget them!

My top tips for your newborn session

The main points you need to know are;

  • Let Bub have some awake time before I arrive so they’re ready for a nice, long sleep.

  • Give Bub half a feed just before I get there. After we dress them, we can give them the rest to help them settle and drift off to sleep.

  • Have them dressed in just a nappy and wrapped in a blanket. This way, we won’t disturb them too much when it’s time to get them dressed.

  • I’ll use the area in your home with the best natural light (usually near a big window, glass door, or in the master bedroom).

  • If you can, tidy up that space and clear away any clutter from tables or bedside tables - it helps keep the photos timeless and beautiful.

  • Keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

  • Most importantly, take this time to slow down, soak in all the cuddles, and celebrate this incredible moment with your new little love.

If you’re like me and love to know ALL the info, then please read on to find out exactly what happens in a newborn photoshoot.

What you can expect on the day

Once I arrive I'll take the time to set up the main space where I'll take the individual photos of bub. I can help you dress & wrap bub, help Mum & Dad with styling choices, & take a walk through your home to discuss where you'd like your family photos to take place.

We'll set aside around 2 hours for the session & will be led by bub’s needs. I understand that newborns are so unpredictable, so please know we're not in a rush & if bub needs a feed, a nappy change or wants to scream the house down while I'm there that is totally fine, & expected! I have two children of my own & have seen it all - I get it, believe me!

What I'll bring

For bub - I'll bring everything we will need for your bub, including several outfits, wraps, blankets & bonnets, all for you to choose from.

For the shoot - I like to get individual & detailed photos of bub either on your bed or couch, but it the lighting isn't great, I bring a baby bean bag that I can set up closer to a window.

For Mum - I have a beautiful client wardrobe you're welcome to use, so please let me know your size & I can send through some options & bring them along to your session.

Preparing your home

LIGHT - Find the room with the best natural light, e.g. a big window or glass doorway in the living room or master bedroom. Here is where I will do most of bub's photos.

WARMTH - To get some beautiful, detailed shots of bub, we will need to unwrap them. I'd love to keep them comfortable, and asleep if we're lucky, so if you could please keep your home warm (but not so hot you're sweating!) that would be great.

STYLING - I know that newborn life is hectic, but if you could have the spaces we will shoot in as 'photo-ready' as possible, just removing clutter from bedside tables etc. is fine. I can always do a quick whip around when I arrive!

Your family

BUB - Please feed just before I arrive so they're as happy as possible, & sleep for the first part of the session if we're lucky! Dress your bub in loose clothing that is easy to take off, & no tight socks or singlets to prevent marks on their skin.

MUM & DAD - You two are a huge part of the show, I love capturing your bond. Take a rare moment to treat yourselves & look your best, e.g. shave or haircut for Dad, hair & makeup for Mum, & no chipped nail polish please as your hands will be in the photos.

SIBLINGS - The bond between siblings is so precious to capture, so if your new bub has big siblings, please include them. This goes for pets too!

OUTFITS - As bub is the real star of this show, when choosing outfits for Mum, Dad & siblings, please choose neutral tones that work well together. I'm always happy to help, just send me some pics.

Lastly, sit back & relax

Sit back, relax & take a moment to appreciate your beautitul bub. Again, thank you for allowing me to capture your family at such a special time in your lives. I adore babies so much & I cannot wait to meet you, your family & your new little one.

I'll see you soon, Lauren x
